BREST, FRANCE-(9-7-2003) Wednesday, 156 teams of the 470 european championship were expected to race
the first step of qualification. With a light wind from SW 3 to 6 kts, the competitors
remained on the boat park.
The 470 european Championship in Brest has begun. Thirty four countries are
represented by 156 teams (112 men and 44 women). This European championship is open to
non European competitors, they cannot be “european champion” but they race for the 40 th
anniversary trophy. Some nations will take in account the results of this trophy or of
European championship for the Athena olympic games selection.
High level champions are present in Brest : the 2002 Europe an world women
champions Sofia BEKATORIOU / Emilia TSOULFA (from Greece), the russians Vlada
ILIENKO / Natalia GAPONOVITCH (4 th at the world championship), the world champions
Simon COOKE / Peter NICHOLAS coming from New Zealand and Andreas
KOSMATOPOULOS / Kostas TRIGONIS 2 nd at the European and World championship
(2002) coming from Greece.
Wednesday these champions have not raced because of the light wind.
Thursday 3 groups of men and 2 groups of women are expected to race. The weather
forecast seems better concerning the wind
